Blick von erhöhtem Standpunkt über die Piazza di San Marco, mit dem Campanile im Bildzentrum und dem rechts stehenden Markusdom. Links wird der Platz von der Biblioteca des Sansovino begrenzt. Leuchtend rot und weiß die Fahne Österreichs, wie sie sich auch in einem weiteren Werk des Malers „Rückkehr der Bronzepferde von San Marco“ findet, das anlässlich ihrer Rückgabe 1815 aus Frankreich entstand. Venedig zählte damals zum Herrschaftsbereich Habsburg. Zeitgemäß auch die Kostüme der Figurenstaffage: Damen mit Reifröcken und Sonnenschirm, Herren in schwarzen Hüten, dabei auch ein Uniformträger.
