Der Markusplatz öffnet sich zu einem Panorama mit scharfen Konturen. Auf dem Wasser treiben Gondeln. Am grauen Himmel verdichten sich die Wolken, während von links, buchstäblich aus dem Nichts, Licht auf den Platz fällt und den unteren Teil des marmorverkleideten Campanile beleuchtet. Der Dogenpalast, der Markusdom und der untere Teil des Uhrenturms sind ebenfalls stark beleuchtet, während die Biblioteca Marciana einen großen Schatten auf die Szene wirft. In der Szene ist der Platz Schauplatz vieler verschiedener Aktivitäten. Die Bürger wollen nach mehreren überstandenen Pestepidemien wieder auf die Straße gehen. Eine Vielzahl elegant gekleideter Gestalten bewegt sich über den Platz, während vom Steg aus ausgelassene Musik erklingt. Ein Kreis von Zuschauern hat sich um einen tanzenden Akrobaten gebildet.
