Dieses klassisch-monumentale Gemälde zeigt den Freitod der Lucrezia, nachdem sie von Sixtus, dem Sohn des Königs von Rom Tarquinius Superbus, vergewaltigt wurde. Diese tragische und emotionsgeladene Episode wurde von italienischen und niederländischen Malern des 17. Jahrhunderts häufig dargestellt. Das vorliegende Werk ist sehr komplex, da sich hier Eindrücke aus der Bologneser Schule besonders von Guido Reni und seinen Anhängern wie Cagnacci und Desubleo und der niederländischen Malerei vor allem Abraham Janssens widerspiegeln. Janssens war in den 20er Jahren des 17. Jahrhunderts der größte Konkurrent von Rubens innerhalb der Künstlerszene Antwepens. (10009913) (10)
