Master of Frankfurt,
ca. 1460 - ca. 1533
Name of convenience for a hitherto unknown Flemish Renaissance master. The artist is not named after his birthplace but after Frankfurt, the city in which most of his works were commissioned.
THE MOURNING VIRGIN
Oil on oak panel.
52 x 37 cm.
Verso old handprinted label.
The painting was possibly part of a former winged altar with thematic continuation in another, subsequent painting.
Notes:
Research has linked the identity of the Master of Frankfurt possibly with Hendrik van Wueluwe; the artist is also likely to have been active in Antwerp until 1518. His manner of painting suggests the painter Hugo van der Goes as his teacher. A self-portrait of the artist with his wife is held at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
