Anmerkung:
Die zur Stabilisierung aufgebrachte, parkettierte zweite Kupfertafel trägt zweifach die Prägung "Jüngeling" (H. Jüngeling, Kunsthandel Noordeinde, 195 Gravenhage). (950061)

Literature:
Cf. Catalogue raisonné: Jan Brueghel d.Ä. Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, vol. 2, p. 655 - 657, image 316 - 316/3. This painting is probably identical with a painting offered on auction in Vienna on 22 March 2001, lot number 166, described as a painting by Mattheus II Brill, 1550 - 1583. In his analysis of the painting by Brueghel, the specialist Ertz points out that an engraving by Sadeler based on a design by Marten de Vos must have been used as a model. While the engraving also names Malchus as the depicted Saint, Brueghel names St Wendelin instead. So while the artist adopted the name of the engraving, he painted a bird in the sky, which appears in the Brueghel painting, however not in the engraving by de Vos. The present artist therefore, seems to have combined the two.
