Pair of maiolica dishes
Diameter: 24 cm.
Manufacture of Cerreto Sannita, 18th century.
A pair of dishes with open-work border. The open-work is accentuated by black and red contours. The centre features arms framed by flags and trophies and topped by a crown. The arms show geometrically arranged grapes and leaves on a red ground. Painted in green and yellow as well as blue and brown on a white ground. Very good condition.
Notes:
The arms seem to be related to those of the Doge Marcantonio Memmo. The Doge's arms show three blue grapes on a yellow ground in the upper half and three yellow grapes on a blue ground in the lower half.
Literature:
For a dish with open-work border, see Vincenzo de Pompeis, La Maiolica Italiana di Stile Compendiario. I bianchi, Turin, 2010, pp. 14, 16, 64.
