Der Künstler studierte in Chile Architektur und ging ab 1933 nach Paris, wo er im Atelier von Le Corbusier (1887-1965) arbeitete. Ab 1938 wandte er sich der Malerei zu. Er reiste viel durch Europa und wurde mit zahlreichen Künstlern, darunter Salvador Dalà (1904-1989), Henry Moore (1898-1986) und Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) bekannt. Ausschlaggebend für seine künstlerische Entwicklung waren jedoch die Begegnung und Freundschaft mit André Breton (1896-1966). Die Jahre des Zweiten Weltkriegs verbrachte er ab Herbst 1938 in New York, kehrte aber 1948 nach Europa zurück und ließ sich 1958 in Rom nieder. Seine Arbeiten werden dem Surrealismus zugeschrieben.
