Domenico Fetti,
1588/ 89 Rome - 1623 Venice, and workshop
MOSES AT THE BURNING BUSH
Oil on canvas.
152 x 115 cm.
Accompanied by an expert’s report by Professor Claudio Strinati.
The painting depicts the Biblical story of Moses’ vision of a bush that is on fire and yet not consumed by flames (Exodus 3:1-10). Fetti's excellent iconography is known today thanks to one of his major works at the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna and to which the present painting bears great resemblance. It was created between 1615 and 1617 and several copies of this prototype are known. Two of these are included in the artist's detailed catalogue raisonée by Eduard Safarik published in 1990. Two more versions can be seen at the Photo Archive of the Fondazione Federico Zeri in Bologna.
The beautiful painting offered in this lot is in good condition. In terms of style and quality it is clearly the most remarkable version of the subject and one which closely follows the composition of the Vienna painting, which was executed by Fetti himself, possibly with the assistance of his workshop.
This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
