Der Herrscher war von 1610 bis 1643 von Frankreich und Navarra, der zweite französische König aus dem Hause Burgund. Sohn von Heinrich IV und dessen zweiter Gemahlin Maria de Medici. Er berief Kardinal Richelieu zum Minister, brach die politisch-militärische Macht der Hugenotten durch die Eroberung von La Rochelle 1627/28.
Dem Ereignis entsprechend auch die Aufschrift an der Frontseite des Sockels. Der Herrscher in einem vorne leicht hochsteigendem Pferd in Rüstung sitzend. Die lockeren Zügel in der linken Hand, in der Rechten ein wohl später ergänzter Stab mit der aus Gemälden bekannten Physiognomie. Auf der Satteldecke der Monogrammbuchstabe „L“ im Lorbeerkranz. Das Zaumzeug reich detailliert, reliefbeschnitzt mit Maskaron-, Lambrequin- und Quastendekor. Der längsrechteckige Sockel zeigt an der Längsvorderseite eine Reiterkampfszene mit einer Burg im Hintergrund, die sich wohl auf die Schlacht bei La Rochelle bezieht. Die Schmalseiten gerundet mit Schriftkartuschen in Elfenbein, links mit Aufschrift „Ludovic XIII/ rex / anno 1635“. Die gegenüberliegende Kartusche mit Aufschrift „LA ROCHELLE/ LE RHIN/ ES der Reiterschlacht äußerst fein ausgeführt in barocker Dramatik. (10702471) (10)

The short sides of the rectangular base rounded off and applied with ivory cartouches, one inscribed "Ludovic XIII/ rex / anno 1635" and the other on the opposite side inscribed "LA ROCHELLE/ LE RHIN/ ESPAGNE/ ITALIE". Beautiful aged patina. The longer sides with ivory panels finely carved with battle scenes in relief in the dynamic Baroque style.
