FOREST LANDSCAPE WITH THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT
Oil on panel.
29.5 x 43 cm.
Maerten Ryckaert’s painting clearly shows the influence of his teacher, Tobias Verhaecht, but also of Paul Bril, whom he possibly met as a young artist during his stay in Rome towards the end of the 1610s, as well as that of Jan Brueghel the Elder. All of these influences can be discerned in this impressive depiction of the Bible story of the Flight into Egypt set in the smallest of spaces within a majestic, lush landscape. The sprawling wilderness almost swallows up the diminutive figures of the Holy Family, despite their placement at the centre of the composition. The painting’s small format emphasizes the artist’s (almost miniaturist) painterly precision and his lively imagination in depicting nature; it is this entrancing visual appeal that also features in many other works that are unquestionably by Maerten Ryckaert.
