Benedetto Gennari,
1633 Cento - 1715 Bologna, attributed
PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG FEMALE ARISTOCRAT, POSSIBLY MARIA BEATRICE DI MODENA, DUCHESS OF YORK
Oil on canvas.
105 x 83 cm.
Benedetto refined his craft as a portrait painter, especially during his stay in England, as the present painting clearly confirms: the manner of painting is elegant, the colours vibrant, the dress materials depicted in minute detailing, the mode of expression is classic. The present painting was probably created during Gennari's stay in England in 1680; as Benedetto Gennari painted the Duchess of York numerous times in those years it can be assumed that the lady in the present work could be Maria Beatrice di Modena.
