(1002181) (11)
Friedrich Preller the Younger,
1838 Weimar – 1901 Blasewitz/ Dresden
AUTUMN MORNING AT THE WARTBURG
Oil on canvas.
100 x 143 cm.
Signed and dated “1890” lower right. Inscribed label on the stretcher frame with exhibition information “Ausstellung: Galerie Del Veccio, Ausstellung für Kunst aller Art und Zeit, Leipzig, 4822”.
The dramatization of the landscape, here in particular with the depiction of Wartburg castle was a stylistic device the artist used to dramatize the historic importance of the subject in a staged manner. As epitome of German culture with Luther’s presence as well as Wagner’s “Sängerkrieg” set at this castle, the painting was supposed to achieve timelessness.
