Wir danken Herrn Fred Meijer für die Zuschreibung an die Werkstatt von Flegel und die Datierung des vorliegenden Werkes auf um 1630. Der darstellte Hering ist typisch vor allem für die niederländische Tafelmalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts auf sogenannten „Ontbijtes“ also Frühstücksstillleben.
Angedeutete Tischplatte mit rundem Schneidbrett sowie auf einem angeschnittenen Hering und Brotscheiben liegendem Messer, welches eine aufsteigende Diagonale in der Bildkomposition darstellt. Dahinter ein Apfel. Auf der rechten Seite, als Gegengewicht, ein Traubenpokal in Vermeil mit abgenommenem Deckel und angedeuteter, in dem Gefäß liegender Flüssigkeit sowie eine dahinter liegende geschlossene Zwiebel.
Verso mit altem Etikett der Rahmenhandlung Lebrun mit der Nummerierung „2838“ sowie weiterer Rahmennummer C (Cadre 2838). Der Malgrund verso mit dem Rest zweier Lacksiegel sowie handschriftlichem Vermerk „Adrian Jansn“.
