Die hochromantische Stimmung dieser Venedigansicht vor rotflammenden Abendwolken bezieht den Reiz aus dem Kontrast von verschatteten Gebäuden und der im Spätlicht noch hell erleuchteten Baugruppe der Kuppelkirche bis hin zur Dogana. Majestätisch erhebt sich die schräg ins Bild gesetzte Fassade des Dogenpalastes, fortgesetzt durch die Libreria del Sansovino. Wie ein Wächter die mächtige Lukassäule. Der Stimmung entspricht auch die Ruhe der Staffagefiguren, die zum Teil schon ruhend am Boden liegen. Eine Gondel erscheint auf einer letzten Fahrt durch die Bogenbrücke, die zahlreichen weiteren Gondeln liegen bereits eng beieinander an der Mole. Dem Maler kam es ganz offensichtlich mehr auf die romantische Stimmung an, als auf eine Dokumentation der Gebäude, wie dies die Vedutisten des 18. Jahrhunderts angestrebt hatten.
Der aus Schleswig stammende Maler, Sohn eines dänischen Offiziers, verbrachte die frühen Jahre seiner Jugend in Haiti, kam mit der Familie 16-jährig nach Kassel, wo sein Onkel, ein Hofgerichtsrat, ihm das Studium ermöglichte. 1830 an der Akademie in München, widmete er sich unter Peter von Hess der Historienmalerei. Weitere Studien in Düsseldorf, dann in Frankfurt bei Philipp Veit. Seine früheren Werke galten der Historienthematik, auch in der Illustrationsgrafik. Von München aus suchte er 1856-1867 mehrmals Rom und Venedig auf. In diesem Zeitraum entstand auch das vorliegende Gemälde. Zu den Erwerbern seiner Bilder gehörte u. a. der Prinzregent Luitpold von Bayern. (1381541) (3) (11)
