Die Darstellung geht auf ein italienisches Theaterstück „Il pastor fido“ (der treue Hirte) zurück. Der Hirte Mirtillo war in die Nymphe Amaryllis verliebt. Sie war Halbgöttin und für den einfachen Mirtillo unerreichbar. Der Hirte verkleidete sich als Nymphe, nahm an einem Kusswettbewerb teil, bei dem sich Amaryllis beim ersten Kuss in ihn verliebt. Als Motiv für ein Gemälde, wie vorliegend, wurde dabei meistens die Krönungsszene des als Frau verkleideten Mirtillo gewählt, vor Landschaftshintergrund. Mehrere Nymphen wohnen dieser Krönung bei, teils verweisen sie durch Handgestus auf das verliebte Paar. Vereinzelt rest.

Das Original-Gemälde von van Dyck stammt von 1631/32 und befindet sich in Schloss Weißenstein, Pommersfelden (1380672) (3) (18)
