Großformatig angelegt, entsprechend des Vorbildes von Rubens, jedoch mit einigen Abänderungen im Detail. Das Motiv – entgegen der Kreuzabnahme – hatte Luca Giordano 1686 ebenfalls aufgegriffen. Der Stich von Jan Witdoeck nach Rubens führte zu Wiederholungen. Allerdings hat der Maler hier im Bild einen betonenden Hinweis auf die Verurteilung Jesu durch die Römer eingefügt, nämlich in der auffällig rot leuchtenden römischen Fahne. (1381927) (11)
